The blended family: advice for adapting well

01 August, 2023 Laurence Morency-Guay

Have you recently formed a new blended family , or are you planning to officially become one with your new life partner? Be aware that this change in family dynamics can lead each member of the family to deal with different challenges , whether it is the change in routine due to shared custody, the difference in parenting style and values of the new partner or even the feeling of guilt sometimes felt by some children in relation to the bonds created with the new life partner.

The important thing to ensure that these changes go well and that everyone can adapt to them at their own pace is to do things gradually and to follow the following advice in particular:

  • First create a bond with the new partner, without entering into the notion of parenthood
  • Ensure that the new partner does not become a replacement for the biological parent
  • Give yourself time
  • Be transparent and leave room for discussions and new emotions
