A visit to the Book Fair: developing the pleasure of reading

10 February, 2024 • Par David Bessette

I remember very well the very first time I bought a book myself. At the age of nine, I was super proud to buy the brand new Asterix "The Rose and the Sword" with the money I had received for Christmas. I still have it, by the way. It is now in my classroom library, available to my students who sometimes read it to discover what their teacher liked at their age.

Every year, I take them to the Book Fair to allow them to also experience the experience of buying their own book. It is a rich and educational act: first you have to choose it, which is less banal than you might think. The child must question his own tastes, let himself be tempted by the front covers and read passages. He can even talk with authors!

You also need to assess your budget . How much money can you spend? Will there be enough left over for a treat? Oops, you also need to think about leaving yourself some room for the 5% tax on books!

So many questions to ask and so many possibilities! And in the end, the child comes out with a book that is all his own and in his image . He understands a little better what it means to manage a budget and he is already eager to start again.

If you want to live this beautiful experience with your family, you can now put the date in your diary. I have found for you all the Book Fairs whose dates have already been announced for 2024. You just have to click on them to get all the details.

Enjoy your visit!
