Let children explore their limits
18 September, 2023
In today's society, it is common to see parents adopt an overprotective approach towards their children. They seek to avoid any potential risks and restrict their activities by telling them phrases such as: "You are too young to do that" or "Don't do that, it's dangerous!" However, by doing so, we can deprive our children of valuable learning and development opportunities.
As a parent, I have always taken a different approach. As a somewhat reckless person who is very happy in movement, I have instead encouraged my children to explore their environment and discover their own limits. For example, instead of forbidding them to climb into a module dedicated to adults, I showed them how to do it safely, while supervising them of course. I believe that it is essential to accompany them in the discovery of their bodies and their abilities, while teaching them the appropriate safety rules.
Letting our children explore their own limits can build their self-confidence , which I believe is important in empowering them. They learn through experience and understand why certain things may be dangerous or inappropriate at a certain age. Of course, this doesn't mean letting them put themselves in danger recklessly, but rather allowing them to take calculated risks and make mistakes that will allow them to learn and grow.
Of course, as parents, it is our duty to ensure the safety of our children. We must teach them the basic rules and make them aware of potential dangers. But at the same time, we must give them the space they need to grow and develop as they explore the world around them.
In conclusion, rather than systematically prohibiting our children from doing certain things, let's let them explore their limits and learn through experience. Let's support them in their discovery of themselves and their environment, while ensuring their safety. By allowing them to explore, we help them develop their self-confidence and become independent and responsible adults.
