While Christmas is often a time when generosity and tradition mingle in a whirlwind of gifts and excitement, it can also be the perfect opportunity to teach our children important lessons about money and the value of things. In this video, Dominique Lépine suggests different ways to rethink how we approach Christmas gifts and how to turn it all into an opportunity for financial education for our children.

The “Gift challenge”

Rather than simply buying expensive gifts, why not encourage the people around you to create unforgettable experiences for the children on a limited budget? This approach emphasizes creativity and ingenuity rather than the price of gifts, and also lets children discover the value of experiences and memories compared with material possessions.

Managing a budget

Involve the children in managing a budget, for example by giving them an amount of money to plan a day of activities or to buy their own gifts. That way, children will learn to make financial decisions and manage their resources responsibly, while preparing to understand the value of money and make informed choices.

Gifting stocks

Rather than giving children material gifts, why not invest in stocks in their name? Not only will they get hands-on experience in the world of finance, but they'll be introduced to ownership and long-term investing, and made aware of important aspects of the modern economy, such as the different types of companies out there and the ethical values they stand for.

Finally, rethinking how we give gifts at Christmas can not only turn this season into a more meaningful and enriching experience for our children, but also give them essential financial skills for the future. By building financial education into our Christmas traditions, we help prepare our children to make responsible financial decisions and thrive in a complex, constantly changing world.
