Fair sharing: Reassessing the distribution of tasks in the family
07 March, 2025
Spring, synonymous with renewal, is the ideal time to reevaluate how tasks are shared at home, not only between spouses but also with children.
Fundamental principle
"No one sits down until everyone can sit down" ( Amélie Chateauneuf ). This principle implies equity in total working time (paid + domestic), leisure and rest.
The 5 steps with the Octave application
1. Task inventory
Create a comprehensive list of all household tasks to be done, from the most daily to the most occasional. Octave offers predefined templates that greatly simplify this step.
2. Definition of frequencies
Determine how often each task should be performed: daily, weekly, monthly or seasonally. This step provides a clear view of the actual workload.
3. Involvement of children
Identify tasks adapted to each child's level of development using tools such as the Autonomy Guide or the Les Belles Combines tables.
4. Time evaluation
Calculate the total time that each person spends on work, whether paid or domestic, to ensure a fair distribution of free time and rest.
5. Distribution in Octave
Assign tasks to family members based on each person’s available time. Octave then automates recurrences, follow-ups and reminders.
Conclusion
Test your scenario for a few weeks and take the time to assess whether it is viable. Adjust the division of tasks and frequency as needed to find the balance that works for your family.
