Reconciling screens and active life: 5 practical solutions to encourage physical activity in children despite the presence of screens
In the digital age, finding the balance between screen use and promoting active living in children can be a challenge for many parents. However, there are practical solutions that can be integrated into the family's daily life. Here are a few of them.
- Establish schedules for screens AND physical activities :
Creating a clear schedule for screen time and dedicated time for physical activity can help establish a healthy routine. For example, after an hour of homework, schedule a break outside where kids can play ball, ride bikes, or just go for a run.
- Family activities :
Turn family time into an opportunity for physical activity . Organize bike rides, nature hikes, or even dance sessions at home. By exercising as a family, you encourage a positive approach to health and well-being and at the same time provide a rhythm for the use of free time.
- Creating an active play environment at home :
Set up a space at home for physical play : a swing, a space with cushions for making huts or climbing, etc. Whether it's a corner of the living room for dancing, an indoor climbing wall, a simple jump rope or a clothes dryer transformed into a hockey goal (which Sydney Crosby's parents did!), be creative and make physical activity easily accessible at home .
- Involving children in decisions :
Involve children in the decision-making process. Let them choose the physical activities they enjoy most . Explain to them why it’s important to move and why too much screen time can be harmful. If they feel invested in the process, they’re more likely to actively participate.
- Incorporate fun challenges :
Make physical activity a fun challenge . For example, organize a backyard scavenger hunt, a family obstacle course, or offer rewards for each week that a certain level of physical activity is reached.
By incorporating these practical solutions into daily routines, parents can encourage active living while acknowledging the reality of the digital age . The goal is to create a harmonious balance where screens coexist with regular opportunities for children to move and thrive.
