For you, does performance pressure represent more of a motivator or more of a burnout driver ? Indeed, the line is often thin between the desire to do things well, the desire to learn and improve, and the stress caused by unrealistic expectations, often too high, which often leads us to not respect our real needs.
And you, does performance pressure generally make you feel good or rather bad ? Do you feel that it exerts a positive or rather negative influence on your life in general?
What is superperformance culture , actually?
It is about wanting to treat humans like machines in a certain way, asking them to be consistent at all times, to improve themselves to the point of never making mistakes and to optimize their functioning so that they always do more and better.
So, when performance becomes a strategy to avoid potential problems, the situation often becomes problematic ; obviously, even if we put all the chances on our side, it is impossible to obtain the guarantee of always remaining safe and not experiencing any negative moments. Social pressure also becomes a problem when it leads us to want to perform in a way that fits in with the crowd , without regard to our own definition of success or our own values.
Finally, to live the performance culture in a healthier way, we must ensure that we are authentic ; act according to our own definition of success and have realistic expectations. It is important to aim for “just good enough” rather than “perfectly good” and to lower our expectations of ourselves and our family . Finally, we must understand that there is space in life for all emotions, for mistakes as well as for successes, for order and disorder, work and rest, etc.
